It was a great day for paddling on Saturday, July 25, 2009. The Makapo Youth Team paddled very well and accomplished a couple of firsts that day.
Above (L to R): Tyler, Jeric, Serena, Kimberly, and Daniel. Mackenzie was at the steersman's meeting and missed the picture:( The team paddled in one of the first heats and beat out 2 boats! Later on in the day, Tyler and Jeric raced with some sighted boys from the NAC and Kahakai, in what might be the first sighted/blind boat crew. Tyler went on to race in one other heat along with boys in the 19 and under category.
All in all, we are very proud of the team, their coach Kirsten, and a special thanks goes out to the parents for driving them out to Santa Barbara to prove to everyone that an all blind youth team can compete alongside, against, and with sighted youth!

Saturday July 18 was a major accomplishment for Makapo - we entered the first blind team to ever compete in a race. Needless to say the kids had a great time. And all on the beach were very proud of their effort. Special thanks to the parents, drivers, and Uncle Tubby for making the day a memorable one. For pictures, click here. Saturday July 25 we take our show on the road to Santa Barbara for the Sate Sprint Championships. If you can make the trek and need information, please click here. |
